UPINGTON
Upington in the Northern Cape has been part of the South African landscape since its proclamation in 1870 and is an ideal stopover point on your way to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, Augrabies National Park, as well as the beautiful arid Richtersveld. It is also a good place from where to explore the flowers of the Namaqualand or the Augrabies Falls, as well as the Spitskop Nature Reserve with its herds of antilope.
Upington must be the only town in the world to boast a donkey statue – a tribute to the pivotal role that this animal has played in the development of the region. The town lies on the northern banks of the Orange River, which explains the many beautifully lush gardens, huge trees and rosebeds in the town. The area is well known for wines, raisins and grapes of export quality – all made possible by the plentiful water of the Orange River.
“Die Eiland” is a holiday resort built on an island in the Orange River. It has a rather unique entrance: a date palm avenue more than a kilometer long, with date palms planted only 9 cm apart. This is the longest and densest palm avenue in the southern hemisphere.

Perhaps you would like to visit Botswana next. It will take you a full day to get to Kang along the Trans Kgalagadi Highway. Kang Ultra Stop is about halfway between Upington and Maun. Allow two days if you want to visit Khama Rhino Sanctuary near Serowe. This is an eco-tourism destination and small game reserve between Orapa and Serowe.
